Spending Time Outdoors

January 11, 2025

By Laura J. Black, DVM, DACVP (Clinical)

My family and I were able to go back to my hometown of South Bend, Indiana and spend time with my mom, siblings, and their families. We were a group of 13 humans, 6 kids (ages 14, 6, 4, 4, 2, and 2) and 7 adults. So, yeah, there was a LOT of energy. The weather was quite mild, minimal snow, and fairly dry, so we were able to do some hiking in the woods behind my mom’s house and let out some of that energy. We also went for a long walk/hike on my uncle’s golf course which, in the winter, is basically a hike in a forest with rolling hills. While everyone else was happily looking for lost golf balls like it was an easter egg hunt, I was on a hunt for bones from dead wildlife. Well, we were all successful, with a final tally of 92 golf balls, bones from a white-tailed deer fawn and mixed bones from multiple small rodents and birds (suspecting piney squirrels and songbirds). Of the group of 13, only my brother didn’t look at me like I was crazy for bringing home a small collection of these bones.
