| What We’re Reading: A Book Recommendation Title: Influence is your Superpower: The Science of Winning Hearts, Sparking Change, and Making Good Things Happen Author: Zoe Chance As small business owners, we often find ourselves doing so much more than pathology. (duh!) We are in the space of having to learn a lot of things that weren’t part of the vet school curriculum, and, frankly, not within our wheelhouse at all! This is all that goes with running a business: financials and bookkeeping, employee hiring and retention, developing mission/vision/values and committing to them, marketing, and so much more. We started this year (2024) by diving into the world of marketing (among other things) and picked up several books that were helpful, but didn’t resonate with us science-minded pathologists. So, naturally, I went to the interwebs and googled “marketing and behavioral science books by women”, to find something that had more potential to inspire me. I found this list on LinkedIn, and found many of them were on hold at the library, including audiobooks. Fortunately, this gem by author Zoe Chance was available on audiobook. After listening for probably 2 minutes, I was hooked. This is science! Be still my heart! Zoe breaks down the science of influence in a very practical way, backed with data, peer reviewed literature, anecdotes, and experience. So much of this book clicked, but the core of what clicked is understanding the “gator brain” and the “judge brain” and this just explains EVERYTHING! So, if you want to know what the gator and the judge are all about, you have to read the book (or listen to the audiobook)! |
